Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah could yet quit the club after the Friday (30 August) transfer deadline.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted an out-of-window move to Saudi Arabia would be “one of the best-kept secrets in football” but suggested there is “still something there”.

Salah is out of contract at the end of this season and can sign a pre-contract with foreign clubs in January 2025, but nevertheless looks set to remain a Liverpool player past the end of the transfer window on Friday.

However, the Saudi window doesn’t shut until next Monday (2 September).

The Egypt international star has been a top target in the Middle East since their recruitment drive started with the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2022.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I’m still waiting to see if the penny drops in terms of any activity with the Saudi Pro League.

“Their window ends after the Premier League window slams shut.

“So there’s still a chance for Liverpool’s stars to make that move, although Alisson has come out to say he won’t go – although he is still tempted.

“Liverpool have had a great start to the season, so there’s no fan revolution at the moment.

“If a Mo Salah does go, it will have been one of the best-kept secrets in football. It’s a blockbuster move.

“I still think there’s something there.”
